S ROBERTOM
S Robertom is the fourth in a series of solo performances in which dancer and artist Roberta Milevoj relies on autobiographical or self-reflective elements as a foundation for building choreographic material. After the performances Roberta, Roberta (2011), Opet Roberta (2013), Rob3rta (2019), the artist places the exploration of her own past as the basis for creating the performance work and dance vocabulary in the present. She’s finding inspiration both in her continuous engagement with dance and in small, everyday footnotes from her private life. The key choreographic-dramaturgical principle established is self-referentiality. The performance itself is a kind of confrontation with Roberta both within and outside of dance, as well as a journey through two decades of the artist’s work in the professional dance scene. The specificity of this performance lies primarily in the artist’s decision to introduce her own diary entries as a conceptual axis, as the backbone of the choreographic material. The result of this decision is the stage juxtaposition of verbal and non-verbal expression, that is, the juxtaposition, on the one hand, of an introspective, confessional, and even poetic discourse and chronology, and on the other hand, a dance vocabulary characterized by simultaneous subtlety and expressiveness.
I am Roberta.
This is my fourth performance where I dance alone.
Dance no longer intertwines with me as it did before.
That relationship is now calmer, more distant, but when it happens, it always recognizes some old habits.
And it hints at a new excitement from the very beginning.
