alter(N)ation
Alter(N)ation grew out of an accidentally found footage, a video of a girl exposed to an invasive gaze of the camera at a moment when she is “not quite herself”, when she “doesn’t have her wits about her”, although it is unclear what she is going through. It was impossible to reconstruct the context and this was not even attempted, because it belongs to different reality. The video served as a “trigger” to search on the scene for something specifically non-specific, which appears in the form of void and absence, dislocation and uprootedness, but also as an unspecified form of violence committed against us. This violence takes away our power to act and the freedom to initiate a new state from within ourselves, exposing us to the evaluation, assessment, and judgment of an external and (un)benevolent eye, but at the same time it might be our own, that is, coming from us, and it is precisely through it that we become a subject. Being attached to something means that something affects us, that it moves us, but it also means that we are bound and limited by it. Alter(N)ation suggests a state of de/attachment, of displacement, of being the other to oneself. Alter(N)ation is relearning to stand and walk out of our shadow. Alter(N)ation is a solo that has always been intended for Una Matija Štalcar Furač (alone) and her artistic and personal habitus.
