December at Zagreb Dance Center Highlights Splendour of Dance and Art of Photography
The Zagreb Dance Center has prepared a rich and inspiring December filled with premieres and artistic events. In addition to three reprise
performances, December also brings preview of residential project Intermezzo, and premiere of Impedance, a show from the Koreospektar program. The middle of the month is reserved for the official opening of the exhibition “Motion Square” of photographer Neven Petrović, an homage of sorts to his previous engagement with the Zagreb Dance Center.
Preview and premiere of new works
The offering of ZPC’s residential program, Filipa Bavčević and Nastasja Štefanić Kralj’s piece Intermezzo, poses the question of the possibility of translating and treating a musical score, as well as the ways of translating musical notation into dance movement, and creating a dance performance starting from a musical composition. The Intermezzo premiere performances is on the program on 6 and 7 December at 8:00 p.m.
Produced by SABMARINE, Impedance is the third joint choreographic project of Lara Frgačić and Endi Schrötter, who continuously explore interpersonal relationships in their work. Inspired by the concept of impedance – resistance to the passage of energy through a system – the piece explores the body’s reactions to the forces that move, stop and transform it, and will have its premiere performance at ZPC on 13 and 14 December at 8:00 p.m.
Reprise performances
At the start of the month, on 3 December, ZPC presents the piece “…, and exits are smaller still” of authors Doris Pocedić, Linda Tarnovski and Luka Bosanac, which problematises a specific relationship to the performance space and the audience’s perspective, in the form of a duet. This year, the piece “…, and exits are smaller still” was nominated for the Croatian Actor Award for Best Choreography in the dance category.
The creative duo Ginevra Panzetti and Enrico Ticconi once again brings to the ZPC stage the highly acclaimed piece ALL’ARME, which has garnered excellent reviews from both the audience and the professional community, performed by the Studio Contemporary Dance Company as part of the PAN-ADRIA network, on 9 and 10 December.
Together we are², performed by Koraljka Begović and Nastasja Štefanić Kralj, arrives at the Zagreb Dance Center for the first time on 18 December at 20:00. In it, two dancing organisms create a new world, producing sounds that acquire new layera with each stage of development, from a single-cell organism to multi-cellular forms by listening to sound, movement, body and space together.
The piece Caroling, choreographed by Petra Hrašćanec and performed by Anika Cetina, Ema Kani and Valentina Miloš, is an exploration of singing Christmas carols as a communal act, at the same time examining the idea of singing in honor of something. Symbolically and in the spirit of Christmas, the piece in on the program during the holiday season, on 20 and 21 December.
The “Motion Square” exhibition and panel
The long-time associate and official photographer of the ZPC, Neven Petrović, in cooperation with the Zagreb Dance Center, inaugurates the exhibition “Motion Square” on 16 December at 8:00 p.m. The exhibition is conceived as a spatial intervention at ZPC’s interior and it will remain inside the space until end of June 2025. As part of the exhibition, there will be a talk with the author and dance creators Ida Jolić and Koraljka Begović, featured in the photos, while the conversation will be moderated by art historian, author of numerous dance performance reviews and author of the exhibition foreword, Jasmina Fučkan. The exhibited photos were created as photographic notes of the performances held at the ZPC, thus addressing the medium of dance through the language of another medium. This unique combination of visual art and dance invites the visitors to experience the beauty of movement through an artistic photographic lens.
