Dance-intensive month of March at Zagreb Dance Center with Dance Intensities, dance film screenings and reprises of renowned shows

The start of spring at the Zagreb Dance Center brings an exceptionally rich program that combines dance performances by renowned choreographers, educational dance intensities, and special film screenings and discussions. The audience will be able to enjoy contemporary dance performances, explore dance forms in intensive workshops and deepen their understanding of the art of dance in conversations with artists and film screenings.

On 6 and 7 March at 8 p.m., the audience can expect a reprise of the exceptional dance show ALL’ARME, choreographed by the acclaimed duo Ginevra Panzetti and Enrico Ticconi, and performed by the Studio Contemporary Dance Company. It is a choreographic work for six dancers, presenting a journey that begins with the exploration of the rhythmic potential of human step by delving into the convincing power of synchronized and collective movement.

This will be followed by the solo performance ENCOUNTER WITH ONESELF by Anđela Bugari and Kristina Lisica, on the program on 8 March, accompanied by an exhibition of works by photographer Antonio Stipinović. Like the subtitles that accompany a film, the exhibition follows the play by outlining the (necessary) stripping away in order for the relationship with oneself to thrive.

A special place in the March program is occupied by ZPC’s first cycle of Dance Intensities, a new multi-day dance and educational event, created as a platform allowing intensive work with artists and exploration of contemporary dance forms. Dance Intensities will feature a multi-day art laboratory KLIKER LAB – NEXT GENERATION, held 10 to 16 March, with a public presentation and panel discussion on the topic A Look into the Future – Dance Theatre for Young Audiences. This program also brings a free screening of the documentary 10 Years of NYDC, celebrating the incredible achievements of the first decade of the National Youth Dance Company from the UK, and the profound impact it has had on everyone involved. On 15 March at 6 p.m., Dance Intensities also presents the children’s play 3PLET, which takes children into the world of unusual but endearing creatures – Love, Shame and Guilt. Although these complex emotions are often divided into positive or negative, these beings, regardless of their emotional nature, are near and dear to all of us. From an early age, we are faced with a whirlwind of emotions and states, while the task of this show is to channel these emotions into a dynamic dance story providing an insight into the imaginative journey of the child’s mind.

Mid-month, fans of contemporary dance will be able to rewatch another show that is always in high demand. THERE, WHERE ALL SOULS GO, authored by Miloš Isailović and performed by the Zagreb Dance Company, deals with the invisible space to which all souls aspire. Where does the soul go when it leaves love? Where do soulless people go, and do they also have the right to reach this light, this infinitely wonderful space?

Dance Extras, another new program of the Zagreb Dance Center, brings dance content not exclusively related to dance performance. On 20 March at 8 p.m., the program features screenings of Boris Charmatz’s dance filmsLes Disparates and Levée, followed by a discussion about his work. Charmatz is known for his innovative approach to dance art and redefining the boundaries of stage expression, as well as for works that explore collective movement, spontaneity and the relationship between body and space. His works often include elements of improvisation and social exploration.

Towards the end of the month, the audience can expect reprises of two unique dance shows. On 22 March, in the show WITH ROBERTA, as the fourth in a series of solo performances, dance artist Roberta Milevoj relies on autobiographical or self-reflective elements as the starting point for the construction of choreographic material. REMAINS/RECOLLECTIONS (25 and 26 March), choreographed by Maja Drobac, in collaboration with Deborah Hustić and Maja Marjančić, brings a search for memory in which the dualities of Western and Eastern culture, tradition and modernity, classical and subversive, constantly intertwine, meet, complement each other, but also diverge. This builds a show in which performance stimulates memory, and memory transforms into performance.

The reprise performance of the piece CHEZ MICHOU (The Mystery of Blue) by renowned creator Žak Valenta on 28 and 29 March, which brings a mysterious and intriguing dance tale inspired by the cabaret aesthetics and rich visual symbolism, closes this month’s program.

During the month, the Zagreb Dance Center continues with traditional morning trainings and workshops intended for professional dance artists. In March, the workshop will be led by Evgeniya Glazunova (3 – 7 March), while the trainings will be led by Gendis Putri Kartini (17 – 21 March), and Silvija Musić (24 – 28 March). Morning trainings and workshops enable an exchange of knowledge, the development of technical skills, and the exploration of new dance methods, under the guidance of experienced pedagogues, choreographers, and dance artists.

More information about the program and ticketing is available on the official website of the Zagreb Dance Center.
